Album art from hell

Gertrude Behanna - God Isn't Dead! (1964)

Is it just me, or does this album cover have some serious mixed messages going on? The contrast of the prim and proper middle-aged Christian woman and repudation of Nietzche's famed quote to a giagantic line of booze bottles and a hypodermic needle full of heroin is just a bit strange. Is the woman in the corner beckoning us as a sinful harlot or is she hoping for release from her colorful glass prison? Maybe she just has a migraine from trying to figure out this stuff too, or maybe she's the afformentioned Late Liz, too late to show up clearly on the album cover and thus doomed to loom in shadow forever. If nothing else, Gertrude's huge, dopey smile indicates that she might've been partaking from some of those bottles in the background herself.

"Here's Johnny!"

The axe and the bag containing recent prey illude to tales untold, meanwhile the family clan awaits his return with glee. Little do they know what is in store for them.
