It was originally aired at 11:30pm on Halloween in 1968, in western New York. Based on the original Orson Wells broadcast.
The script was re-written, the locality was changed to Grand Island New York nearby Buffalo, where I grew up.
Real newsmen were used, and they pretended that it was real using real locations and landmarks as backdrops. The newsmen were given the basics of the story and they improvised the rest.
It was a few years later, that the broadcast was re-aired. Also on Halloween. The broadcast was repeatedly interrupted with announcements indicating that it was not real.
I knew it was coming on, however, I did not realize that Grand Island was used as the backdrop.
I decided it would be fun to play a trick on my Mom and have her listen to the broadcast without telling her that it was fake.
My Dad had a fence installation business. He was on a call with a customer that evening. I did not know where the call was located.
So I tell my little sister I'm doing this and she is in on it with me. We have my Mom listen, and it is all very convincing. The problem was that my Dad's fence call was on Grand Island.
So as soon as she hears this, she starts freaking out. She goes and finds the number of the customer and calls them. When we realize what she is doing we try to stop her. But she won't have it.
She starts describing these improbable events 1st to the customer and then to my Dad. Meanwhile we are frantically trying to get her to listen to the disclaimer. It does no good, she is intent.
The disclaimer is over and they are back to the program, She wants my Dad to immediately leave and come home, which he does. Mom is telling us to shut up anytime we try to tell her what is going on.
Then they start describing the destruction of the Grand Island Bridge and she really starts freaking out. (My Dad would be coming home on this bridge).
She finally hears the disclaimer and we all have a laugh.
Dad arrives home, can't figure out what she was talking about since he saw nothing unusual on the way home. We explain, more laughter.
Dad has to call and explain why his wacky wife called and what it was all about. He hangs up, we laugh again, then we got in trouble.
